The Summer 2018 Anime Season has started and I've had a chance to try out a half dozen of the new shows. There wasn't anything in the previews for this season to get me particularly excited – particularly not all of the Isekai shows – but I'm doing some “barrel scraping” just in case there is a surprise or two.

“Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro” - one episode watched, initial rating “B”. A goofy premise – stories about a girl's daily trips to high school – but the first episode was reasonably imaginative and funny so I'll stick around for a while and see where it goes. However, I suspect that it will be difficult to maintain the originality.

“Island” - two episodes watched, initial rating “C”. This is a visual novel adaptation with the sort of plot we've all seen before - an amnesiac 20-something who washes up on an isolated island and becomes involved in the mysterious lives of some of the girls there. I don't think that it will be watchable in the long run but I'll stick around for another episode or two to see if it improves.

“Planet With” - one episode watched, initial rating “B+”. An action/mecha show with a twist – the “special” teen appears to be working with the bad guys. The first episode had enough action and was strange enough for me to stick around a while more.

“Satsurikuno Tenshi” - one episode watched, initial rating “C”. A murder-game horror series of the type that I don't usually enjoy, but I'll stick around for another episode to see if the protagonist changes from a victim to a killer.

“Kyoto Teramachi Sanjou no Holmes” - one episode watched, then dropped. Final rating “C-”. Painfully dull and under-animated paint-by-number shoujo dreck about a teen who takes a part time job in an antique shop.

“Overlord III” - one episode watched, initial rating “B”. The first episode of the third season of this Isekai series stuck with shaggy dog story telling concerning the main characters instead of wasting time on pointless side characters, so it was actually fun. However, I expect the series to go back to the second season's focus on Pointless Side Characters so I'm not sure if I will stick around long.

They seem to be following the light novels fairly faithfully,
with a ratio of 3 volumes per anime season. That means this
season should adapt books 7-9.

I remember nothing about book 8 at all, and 7 was iffy, but
I seem to recall that 9 centered firmly around Ains, so you
might want to dip back in for the last few episodes.

Book 4 (the one about the lizardmen) was the absolute nadir
of the series, or at least as far as I got with it.

Hmmm - I've never skipped two thirds of a series then started watching it again... I'll see what next week brings, then who knows, maybe I'll take that approach...

Thanks -
