“Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin” is a contemporary fantasy based upon a manga series. A new civil servant joins up with his new work assignment, which happens to be in an office that operates at night. It turns out that this bureau’s mandate is to interact with various spirits and what not that coexist with humans in the city and for the most part are not noticed by anyone. The new guy goes out on patrol with two existing members of the organization and they become involved in a clash between angels and tengu. But it turns out that the new guy can understand the angels and tengu and so is able to defuse the situation. His partners are astonished that a human can understand spirit language and the new guy has no explanation for this, but then an old tengu flies up and calls the new guy Abe no Seimei.

The first episode of this show was laid back fun, with decent animation and a fair amount of humour. It is likely to be light weight and without many artistic pretentions, but it ought to be entertaining and I’m hoping that it will provide reasonable brain candy for the season. My initial rating is B.
