“Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi”, aka “Sorcerous Stabber Orphen 2020” is a blast from the past brought to light twenty-plus years after the original anime series and 25 years after the original light novel. This is a very 90s style comic fantasy and the animators for the new version have kept a lot of the original “look” of the characters and the overall design.
A young sorcerer witnesses a terrible magical accident. He leaves sorcerer’s school and wanders off in the hope of finding a way to reverse the result of the accident. Years later the sorcerer lives a rather sketchy life and deals with a number of other sketchy people in a fantasy world full of dwarves, dragons and sorcerers.
The first episode of “Orphen 2020” caught the feel of the original very well. The original wasn’t that great, but it was entertaining in its own way. I expect this remake to continue on it that manner and I’ll watch it for the feeling of nostalgia. This is a “pop the popcorn and lower the expectations” series so as long as one doesn’t expect Great Art it ought to be worth watching. My initial rating is C+.
