Some years ago I started importing anime blu-rays from the Far East.
Inevitably there is the region problem as the Far east is region A while
the UK is region B. Fortunately the Studio Ghibli BDs are generally all
region (region free) as well as having English subtitled. I did acquire
one BD which was region A and had to acquire a region A player to play
it. And this was the only BD that would not play on my Sony BDP-S480 IIRC.
I have been recovering from an illness recently and looking through my
collection wanted to confirm which was the unplayable one. I'm pretty
sure it was "From Up on Poppy Hill", Tiawanese edition, marked as Region A.
So I put it in the BDP-S480, and what happens? I get a message saying
something like "This disk may take three minutes to start playing",
which I have never seen before. And then it started to play, and worked
perfectly.
Go figure.

Does your Sony upgrade it's firmware?

That's not clear, but it has an active Internet connection.
