What is the 1st movie which focused on
A Game (a contest) between Cop and Perp(Villain)?
like a Chess game?

The Ministry of Fear (1944): This film features a detective chasing a
killer who leaves cryptic clues, creating a puzzle-like game that the
detective must solve. It leans more towards a game of riddles and
deciphering the villain's mind than a traditional chess match.

Wait Until Dark (1967): This film features a blind woman being
terrorized by criminals who are unaware of her disability. The
protagonist uses her wit and cunning to outsmart them, creating a
suspenseful mental battle.

Frenzy (1972): This Alfred Hitchcock film features a detective chasing
a serial killer, with both employing psychological tactics and trying to
anticipate each other's moves.

Modern Films (1960s - Present):

Modern films often explicitly explore the psychological battle between
cops and criminals, with elaborate plans and counter-plans.
Possible contenders:

* **French Connection (1971):** This gritty film depicts a detective
relentlessly pursuing drug smugglers, with both sides employing strategies.

------ Yes, the scene in the NYC subway,
where the French kingpin waves from within the train.

* **Se7en (1995):** This film features a serial killer who stages his
murders as elaborate puzzles, forcing detectives into a mental game.

* **The Silence of the Lambs (1991):** This film features a complex
psychological battle between an FBI agent and a serial killer, with both
manipulating each other.

"The Taking of Pelham 123" (1974) -- The 1st film to focus on
the Villain's psychology?

Fritz Lang's "Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler" (1922) explores the
psychological manipulation of a criminal mastermind.

Scarface (1932): This film delves into the driven ambition and ruthless
nature of a gangster.

Psycho (1960): This iconic film explores the disturbed psyche of Norman
Bates, blurring the lines between victim and villain.

Peeping Tom is a 1960 British psychological horror-thriller film
directed by Michael Powell and written by Leo Marks. It stars Carl
Boehm, Anna Massey, and Moira Shearer.

Eeek, don't leave out Arsene Lupin and Detective
Justin Ganimard.

The first film for Lupin was in 1908 (but I
don't know if Ganimard is in it).

The "gentleman thief" credo apparently involves
the game aspects

"They steal not only to gain material wealth
but also for the thrill of the act itself..."

Arsene Lupin -- is indeed a pioneering look
into the 1st person POV(psychology) of a Villain.

"The Taking of Pelham 123" (1974) -- The 1st film to focus on

in the original film, Shaw is just a psychopath with a Brit accent.

in the remake, Travolta is interesting as a character.

is Tilde new? or has been a regular at AUE ?

"The Taking of Pelham 123" (1974)-- when i rewatched this,
i finally saw how W.Matthau (sp?) is an interesting actor.

It's a long time (21 years) since I read 'Arsène Lupin contre Herlock
Sholmès' etc., and, if my memory of him is reliable, I much prefer
Raffles - who of course came before Lupin. The first film about Raffles
appeared in 1905, the first about Lupin in 1908.

Definitely Raffles, and let's include Simon
Templar. There are a couple others but those
three are the ones that always come to (my)
mind. Templar in particular has enjoyed a
lot of ongoing popularity.

Doubtful it's the first, but you'd need a film
historian to add older examples. Film noir should
be especially fertile for that.

Haven't seen that remake in a while, what I recall
is Travolta's hammy performance. He couldn't hold
a candle to Shaw.

There have been three adaptations of the book,
I have not seen the made-for-tv version. The 1974
version would be the one to beat.
