I was thinking today about the Blue Sonnet OAV from the 80s which was
about a supervillain from the United States who ends up going to a
Japanese high school. It's not as funny as it sounds. But it did have
an inadvertently funny scene in it where Sonnet, who appears to be a
sheltered foreign "princess" to Japanese eyes finds herself cornered by
the school's two juvenile delinquents who assume that she'll have a lot
of pocket money and demand it from her by threatening her with box
cutters.

Despite her elegant appearance however Sonnet isn't just a cyborg
killing machine with vast telekinetic powers. She's also a girl who was
originally born and raised in a New York slum who killed her mother
after her mother tried to sell her.

She freezes, not worried at all about being hurt, but uncertain how to
deal with them without blowing her cover and has the problem solved for
her. Me, I thought it was a pity she had no sense of humour, since the
appropriate reaction for a New York girl from the slums being mugged by
these suburban wanna-bes armed with art supplies would have been laughter.

Or even slaughter.

This was probably a very rude wake-up call for a nice girl, but it may
also be a symbolic of the connection between Japan and the USA.

Blue Sonnet is of US origin, and even if she and her Japanese opponent
don't share the same ethics in detail, they help each other, and they
need to be up of their slumper.

For an anime of 1989 this is very actual nowadays, especially in times
of Mr. Trump, isn't it? It wasn't only true for 1989.
