Post by elsiePost by Captain NerdPost by elsiePost by Captain NerdPost by elsieEarlier I mentioned laughing at an allusion to Martin Heidegger, the 20th
century German philosopher, in Black Lagoon. But having just watched vol.
2, I think the series is deeper than I initially realized. I first saw
it
at
a meeting of the anime club I advise, and in that setting, it was too easy
to focus on the guns and girls aspects. I also hadn't seen ep. 5 until
tonight, with Revy's soliloquy on "things".
It's seeming very existentialist at the moment, and it's also
reminding
me a
lot of the Matrix films, in terms of using a action plot to explore
philosophical ideas.
If you intend to watch the whole thing (both series), I'd like to
read your take on episodes 13-15.
Cap.
I think I will be watching the whole thing. I'd only seen a few episodes
previously, but after watching discs 1 & 2 from netflix, I think I'll be
purchasing.

It's also mercifully short, as series go, I believe there's only going
to be 6 disks, a la Cowboy Bebop. My favorite scene between Rock and
Reby is the one where they're being "errand boys" and they're eating
in the outdoor noodle shop at the end. It's where Rock shows that he
really is strong, just not in a way that any of them expect, least of
all Reby.
Cap.
The one where they get in the big shouting match? Yeah, I really like that
scene too.
And not just the shouting but the shooting, too! Facing down the
barrel of a gun pointed at you by someone not entirely stable,
and then moving it away at almost the last second... And the
only ones who know he did it are himself and Reby.
Post by elsieThe thing is that Rock brings a 21st century business sense to the group,
where it's not enough to have information about one's clients but one has to
know the socio-political context which affects who makes what decisions.
That's something none of the rest of the Lagoon crew has. Dutch comes the
closest, but he has the mind of a small businessman, while Rock has been
trained to think like a corporate man. It's funny but Rock's the one who
could make them into another Hotel Moscow, if he wanted to.
<biting tongue> You really will like the rest of the series, not
because you're speculation is right (or wrong, ^===^), but because
there is so much going on that you can enjoy the speculation. The
characters are that deep, too. And none of them entirely sane...
And if the rumored third season is made, daaaayum...
Cap.
(... if nothing else, I believe there are novels ...)
